Brendan Johnston: Images and Words
I have always been interested in writing and photography, and I've had both published throughout the years. My first feature
article was a biography of the band
Dream Theater for the newspaper Korean Quarterly. Dream Theater had just finished a tour
with
Deep Purple and Emerson Lake and Palmer, and the newspaper was looking for an overview of the band to accompany an
interview with their bass player, John Myung, who is Korean-American.
Also as a freelance writer, I did a story and review of a local independent film called
Shadim for a local newspaper called the East Lyme Tymes. The film just had it's debut at
Niantic Cinemas. My friend Anna and her husband had roles in the movie, and Anna had
done the soundtrack.

I continued to write for the paper on a freelance basis while I also worked full-time as
writer and editor at the BBP division of
Simon and Schuster. A few years later I became
staff writer with
Shore Publishing, a company that published 16 newspapers along the
Connecticut shoreline.

I worked primarily for the paper I had freelanced with, now called the
Lyme Times. I
covered local news, including arts and entertainment, town government, education, etc.,
and also did some photography. Some of my articles and photos were picked up in other
Shore newspapers as well.
While at the Lyme Times, I interviewed author Jeff Benedict. Benedict had published five books, the most controversial being
Without Reservation, where he alleged the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation fraudulently gained tribal recognition, ultimately
opening Foxwoods Resort and Casino. On a more lighthearted note, I also snapped the photo below of a seal chilling out on the
frozen Niantic River. I like to think that he was waving at me...
